What We’re Wearing This Winter… PT. 2

After being in lull for nearly a year… We’re back.

What better way to get back into the swing of things than by following up on the first and only topic covered by SCNY thus far, ‘what we’re wearing this winter’.

I don’t think I’m alone in feeling more inspired to really lean into my sense of style during the cooler months of the year— ‘cooler’, to put it lightly. To put it plainly, New York has faced some downright brutally cold days, and we haven’t even made it to Christmas.

As we brace for the cold and pull the heavier pieces out from the back of our closets, may we find the joy in bundling up and making it as chic as possible…

Read on for trends that are taking the streets by storm this winter. (And I mean that figuratively—please, God, no actual snowstorms!)

I think the fashion gods rejoice when a trending piece is also timeless. Trench Coats are quite the breath of fresh air from other seasonal fads and a piece that consumers won’t look back on with confusion. Coming in a number of variations, trench coats are the perfect piece to tie together any outfit while accomplishing the task at hand… keeping you warm. (For some, like myself, warmth may come second to looking chic— but that’s besides the point.)

Mini shorts with tights. That’s the trend. Spice it up by wearing a fun-colored stocking like burgundy. Or a textured tight if you’re feeling crazy. Pair with a boot and trench for optimal warmth, because, if we’re being honest sheer tights could not be less effective at braving winter windchills.

Are we blaming Gen Z for the decline in popularity of pants tucked into boots? I say that as a fellow ‘Gen Z-er’. After the phase of wearing skinny jeans—or jeggings, if you will—tucked perfectly into my calf-length UGG boots, I never even considered tucking my jeans into boots. Especially as the jeans I was sporting got baggier. That being said, fast forward 10 years, and I’ve reached a point where the baggier my pants are, the better I think they look tucked. Let’s call it a chic juxtaposition.

If you’re at all tapped into runway, you couldn’t have missed that several Spring Summer 25 collections from brands such as Saint Laurent, Miu Miu, and Thom Browne placed a strong emphasis on suiting. While we have not yet reached spring 2025 in terms of the time of year, the trends from that fashion month are already in full effect. What better way to kill two birds with one stone, the birds being dressing for the winter and looking good while doing it—than by wearing a sophisticated suit. An added bonus is that very little thought is required to put the outfit together. Dress it down with a t-shirt or up with a sweater. The option is yours to make!
